Our department cares for acutely and chronically ill children with diseases of the kidneys, liver, intestines, joints and vessels.
The focus is on kidney and liver transplantation, the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases using endoscopy under anesthesia and the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases with modern therapeutic agents.
Nephrology: On level 7 there is not only a bed ward but also the only children's dialysis ward in Austria. All options for renal replacement therapy and the treatment of inflammatory diseases by removing inflammatory substances through plasmapheresis are available. The children are cared for by our multidisciplinary team in collaboration with specialists in transplant surgery, pediatric surgery, urology and anesthesia. In addition, we can take advantage of the recently established pediatric radiology.
There is a particular interest in interdisciplinary collaboration for children with congenital malformations of the urinary tract (CAKUT).
Furthermore, a research group is developing a peritoneal dialysate that is as gentle as possible.
In the field of gastroenterology, the focus of interest is the care and diagnosis of acute liver failure, the care of severe liver failure before, during and after organ transplantation and the diagnosis of all disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The necessary pediatric endoscopies, gastrointestinal bleeding stops and diagnostic procedures are carried out under anesthesia in the pediatric endoscopy center.
In the field of pediatric rheumatology, medications are used in phase III and IV multicenter studies. There is a collaboration with the uveitis outpatient clinic of the eye clinic and with all specialties in pediatrics as well as rheumatology and orthopedics for adults. The focus is on the care of juvenile polyarthritis, systemic arthritis (Still's disease) and systemic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, vasculitis and collagen diseases. There is a three-month pediatric rheumatism training curriculum for colleagues who will care for children with rheumatism in their regular hospitals.
