The development of pediatric and adolescent medicine in a social context requires modern and high-quality training for students in pediatric and adolescent medicine.
The core unit teaching in pediatrics under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Manfred Marx and the deputy head of Priv.-Doz. DDr. Christoph Binder reports directly to the clinic management. The secretariat, led by Twyla McGee, is our communication point for all administrative and organizational questions from students.
Goals
The aim of pediatric teaching as part of the human medicine course N202 is to impart
- basic pediatric knowledge,
- essential knowledge,
- clinical skills in pediatric and adolescent medicine (e.g. also in simulation courses for pediatric resuscitation).
Our focus is on supporting students in the development of their medical competence in the medical and psychosocial areas:
- raising awareness of medical responsibility for individual young patients,
- leading to medical decisions in the sense of “medical reasoning and decision making”,
- “translating” the language of medicine into the language of patients or their parents.
Instruction
We are constantly developing the pediatric teaching in the curriculum, so in accordance with the 2012 curriculum amendment and in cooperation with external lecturers in the teaching hospitals, we have structured the content of the training of our students in the clinical-practical year (KPJ) in accordance with the Austrian training catalog. We use a wide variety of teaching methods including e-learning and simulation (e.g. for Pediatric Life Support), and regularly scheduled reflection hours enable us to have our finger on the pulse of the students.
Teaching motivation
The children's clinic loves teaching, so there are many extra-curricular lectures, elective subjects and also the interdisciplinary postgraduate program POET!
You can find a summary of why we enjoy teaching and are committed to the further development of teaching at the university level in this article (in German):
