Neuro-Oncology outpatient clinic and day clinic

A diagnosis of a brain tumor or other neurological cancer in a child is a profound challenge for the entire family. Our specialized department is dedicated to providing comprehensive care and treatment for children and adolescents with these complex conditions.

The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Working Group at the Medical University of Vienna is one of the largest centers for the treatment of pediatric brain tumors in the German-speaking world. At our center, we care for children and adolescents with primary brain tumors, spinal cord tumors, and tumors associated with neurofibromatosis. Approximately 60 patients with newly diagnosed tumors of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) are treated at our center each year.

Areas of focus

Tumors of the central and peripheral nervous systems; tumor predisposition syndromes for CNS tumors:

  • Comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis in cases of suspected CNS tumors
  • Outpatient tumor therapies (CTX, antiangiogenic therapies, targeted therapies, etc.)
  • Outpatient pediatric oncology care during radiation therapy
  • Examinations during and after completion of tumor therapy
  • Outpatient supportive care
  • Evaluation of hormonal axes
  • Follow-up care after cancer, including identification and treatment of late complications following cancer
  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients with recurrent CNS tumors or secondary malignancies
  • Interdisciplinary patient care

Our facility offers:

  • 4 beds with adequate monitoring capabilities
  • A treatment room for administering therapies (including intrathecal chemotherapy)
  • Mobile certified nursing service
  • Functional therapies (speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.)
  • Psychological care, including neuropsychometric testing and training
  • Social work
  • Educational support

At the outpatient clinic and day clinic, patients undergo immediate medical examination and receive care (= outpatient treatment). Afterward, they typically leave the clinic.
